According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, accounting positions are expected to grow by 11 percent over the next ten years, which is why individuals who successfully complete bachelor’s in accounting degree programs in Florida and other states may find themselves in high demand in the job market. In 2015, there were over 75,000 accountants and auditors employed in Florida, but there are many other financial positions that a degree in accounting are part of the qualifications. The average salary for an accountant or auditor in Florida in 2015 was $69,090. However, personal financial advisors averaged $123,690 per year while financial examiners earned an average of $79,190 per year. Loan officers averaged $82,790 per year.

Stricter laws and regulations related to financial reporting of businesses has led to a need for individuals who have an understanding of accounting. In addition, as the economy grows, there will be a need for people with knowledge of financial reporting and examination. An increasingly complicated tax structure is another reason why accounting positions are expected to grow faster than positions in other industries throughout the country.

Fisher School of Accounting

The Fisher School of Accounting traces its roots back to 1923 when the University of Florida offered their first accounting degree. The school grew rapidly and, in 1947, the department of accounting was formed. An experimental school formed in 1977 and became permanent in 1983. The school was named in 1986 to honor Frederick Fisher, an alumnus of the school. The school creates graduates who have an extensive understanding of accounting. In fact, 85 percent of the students in the department score above the national mean on standard entrance examinations.

Bachelor of Science in Accounting

The Fisher School of Accounting offers a bachelor’s in accounting in Florida that provides students with the foundations of accounting and business. It is a four-year program and is designed to prepare students for the ever-changing business environment as well as for graduate study. In order to graduate from the program, students must take the Business Field Test through the Educational Testing Service. The score is incorporated into a core business course taken at the end of their final term. Students are provided with an understanding of business disciplines and how they relate to a growing global environment. Students are able to prepare financial statements and to identify basic tax laws as they apply to both businesses and individuals. Students understand the basic concepts of cost and managerial accounting as well as how to interpret, understand and communicate data. Students are also able to analyze and interpret economic events and attest to the fairness of financial representations.

3/2 Program

The Fisher School of Accounting at the University of Florida offers a 3/2 bachelor’s in accounting program in Florida that allows students to complete their Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Master of Accounting degrees in five years. Students choose from concentrations in auditing, taxation or general studies with no concentration. Students who are attending the University of Florida who receive Pell grants or undergraduate scholarships will lose eligibility for funding if they enter this program. It is recommended they discuss their options with an academic advisor. This program is designed for students who hope to sit for the Florida CPA examination which requires completion of 150-credit hours.

The objective of the bachelor’s in accounting in Florida offered through the School of Business Administration at the University of Miami prepares students for a smooth transition from college into entry-level positions in accounting. Webber International University was founded in 1927 by Grace Knight and Roger Babson and named in honor of their granddaughter, Camilla Grace Webber. Babson was an expert in economics and finance.
